History Of The Christmas Tree

The history of the Christmas tree dates back to the time of St. Boniface who traveled from England to Germany in the 7th century. The history of Christmas tree traditions and stories also date back to this era. Christmas tree history is said to come from when St. Boniface found pagans worshiping an oak tree, so he cut it down and from the roots a fir tree grew. Somehow he saw this as a symbol of Christianity and the trinity.

History, Christmas tree and pagan ideas are all tangled in a web of symbolism and stories told to illustrate concepts and occurrences. The origin and history of a Christmas tree relate back to St. Boniface seeing the triangular shape of the fir tree as a representation of the trinity, God, Son and Holy Ghost.

The history of the Christmas tree and the way pagan practices are very similar should not come as a surprise. The early Christians tried to make pagan practices fit the Christian calendar, in order to convert the pagans to Christianity.

More recently the history of Christmas tree topers goes back to the symbols from the biblical references and the Christmas nativity stories. The Christmas tree lights history has its basis in the same symbolism too. The star that led the three wise men to the Bethlehem stable is carried through the lights that adorn a Christmas tree.

So the history of Christian Christmas tree decorations comes from the biblical stories, the star, the angels the gifts from the wise men and the tree itself comes from the pagan practices. The history of the Christmas tree toppers and the history of the first Christmas tree although they come from different sources the link is the Christmas story and the Christian saints who tried to convert the pagans. Christmas tree toppers relate back to the biblical symbols while the first Christmas tree comes from the pagan ritual of worshiping an oak tree and St. Boniface cutting it down and telling a story to convert the pagans to Christianity.

The first Christmas tree in history was the fir tree that grew out of the cut down oak that St. Boniface destroyed. He took the fir tree to symbolize the trinity but he hung the fir tree upside down. Christmas tree history started with the upside down triangle representing Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Later on the tree was again seen right way up and the modern day Christmas tree was born.
